Syrian Democratic Alliance: Important Statement on Amendments to Syrian Curricula

The Syrian Democratic Alliance has issued an official statement addressing the recent amendments to the Syrian educational curricula announced by the Interim Government through the Minister of Education, Mr. Nadhir Al-Qadri.
The statement clarified that the aim of these amendments, according to the minister’s remarks, is to remove content glorifying the Assad regime and correct errors in the interpretation of religious texts.

The Alliance reaffirmed its support for any steps that contribute to eliminating manifestations of glorification of the previous regime, calling for a clear directive prohibiting the teaching of any materials that promote the symbols of the Assad regime. At the same time, it emphasized the importance of maintaining the quality of education and ensuring that the curricula remain aligned with global knowledge, avoiding any changes that could weaken the educational process or isolate students from the world.

The statement highlighted that the amendments should be part of a comprehensive plan to improve education in Syria. The Alliance pointed to the major challenges currently facing the educational process, including deteriorating infrastructure, the absence of regular salaries for teachers, and the need for psychological and educational support programs for students returning from neighboring countries.

On another note, the Alliance expressed its concern over the lack of transparency in decision-making processes related to these amendments. It considered that decisions of this magnitude, made without clear communication or public discussion, reflect a worrying tendency towards monopolizing power and imposing unilateral visions without taking into account the diversity of Syrian society.

The Alliance also warned against any amendments that might affect Syria’s cultural and historical identity. It noted that removing significant historical figures and events, such as the Martyrs of May 6 or the Code of Hammurabi, and replacing concepts of citizenship with narrower ideologies, could weaken the role of education in fostering national unity and cultural diversity.

The Alliance concluded its statement by calling for the inclusion of experts and local communities in educational decision-making, stressing that education is the cornerstone of Syria’s future. It reaffirmed its commitment to defending the right of Syrians to education that reflects their cultural heritage, promotes democratic and pluralistic values, and prepares future generations to actively participate in building a united nation based on knowledge and openness.
