The Syrian Democratic Alliance Condemns Tampering with the Memory of Syrian Prisons

The Syrian Democratic Alliance has issued an official statement strongly condemning irresponsible interventions at Syrian prison and detention sites, which serve as living witnesses to the severe violations and crimes committed against the Syrian people. The statement emphasized that any attempts to alter the features of these sites or erase evidence constitute a blatant violation of justice and a threat to the collective memory of Syrians, hindering efforts toward genuine accountability and reconciliation.

The statement highlighted three key points:

  1. Rejection of Evidence Tampering: The Alliance stressed that any attempt to modify or remove evidence of crimes in prisons is itself a crime. It called for preserving these sites as a national and moral duty to ensure justice for the victims and prevent the recurrence of such atrocities.
  2. Entrusting the Issue to Specialized Bodies: The statement urged the authorities to delegate the handling of these sensitive sites to independent Syrian and international expert committees, emphasizing the importance of preventing unqualified or irresponsible interventions.
  3. Condemnation of Collective Memory Manipulation: The Alliance underscored that tampering with collective memory, intentionally or otherwise, amounts to denying victims their rights and perpetuating the violation of their dignity. It called for a responsible approach to this critical issue.

The statement concluded with a clear message to those attempting to engage with this sensitive matter without proper understanding, warning that uncalculated actions could undermine justice and disrespect the victims and their families.

“Justice cannot be achieved without preserving the truth,” the statement declared, reaffirming the Alliance’s commitment to supporting accountability efforts and protecting the collective memory of Syrians as a cornerstone for achieving peace and reconciliation in Syria.
