The meeting brought together the Alliance’s President, Dr. Marwan Khoury, and General Secretariat member, Ms. Marie Therese, with the European Union’s envoy for the Syrian file, Mr. Michael Unmacht, who assumed his position on September 1, 2024. The meeting aimed to discuss the current situation in Syria and the conditions of Syrian refugees in European countries such as Germany and Austria, as well as Lebanon.
Introduction of the Alliance and Its Goals
During the meeting, Dr. Marwan Khoury and Ms. Marie Therese provided a comprehensive overview of the Syrian Democratic Alliance, outlining its political vision and guiding principles, and emphasizing the importance of Syrian-Syrian dialogue in achieving political transition. The discussion focused on the necessity of building a democratic state based on equal citizenship, ensuring that everyone has a role in shaping Syria’s future.
Refugee Conditions and the Syrian File
The discussion addressed the conditions of Syrian refugees in Germany and Austria, as well as Lebanon, with an emphasis on the importance of providing a safe and stable environment for refugees and protecting their rights, especially given the challenges they face in these areas. The conversation also explored the situation within Syria, where both parties highlighted the impact of de facto authorities on the ground and the resulting political and security complexities.
Ongoing Communication and Cooperation
The meeting concluded with an agreement between the Syrian Democratic Alliance and the EU envoy to maintain continuous communication and cooperation on critical issues related to Syria. Both parties underscored the importance of future meetings, whether virtual or in-person, to ensure ongoing dialogue around political and humanitarian solutions.
Mr. Michael Unmacht’s Diplomatic Expertise
It is worth noting that Mr. Michael Unmacht, the EU envoy for the Syrian file, has over 26 years of diplomatic experience. He is fluent in Arabic, having studied the language at a language institute in Damascus, which enhances his ability to understand the complexities of the Syrian file and effectively communicate with Syrian stakeholders.
